Subhabrata Paul
Assistant Professor
About-
Botany is my root but I prefer to consider myself as a biologist. I like teaching, rather I enjoy sharing ideas with students.
Cell Biology excites me. I want to explore interplay between various cell death processes. Also evaluating roles of micronutrients in germination and growth of crop plants is another research interest.
Qualifications+
B.SC. Botany (University of Calcutta, 2008)
M.SC. Botany (University of Calcutta, 2010)
Ph.D. Botany (University of Calcutta, 2018)
Biography+
I have persued my under graduate studies in Botany from Dinabandhu Andrews College, University of Calcutta (2005-2008) and post graduation studies from Department of Botany, University of Calcutta (2008-2010).
My doctoral research was based on anti-proliferative role of phytochemicals against cervical cancer cells and I was awarded PhD degree in the year 2018. During this time I have mentored several students for their dissertation work and assisted students for short term projects.
Before joining this esteemed University as an assistant professor in 2019, I served as a guest lecturer for Postgraduate students of Lady Brabourne College and Serampore College and as college appointed full-time lecturer for undergraduate students of Bangabashi Evening College.
Awarded INSA Visiting Scientist Fellowship 2023 for two months at Plant Physiology and Crop Improvement division, NRRI, Cuttack. During my stay, I have worked on constructing knockdown mutants of Rice by CRISPR-Cas method.
Research / Administrative Experience+
I have two distinct research interests. My primary line of research deals with investigation of different modes of cell death and their association with Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) E6 E7 proteins in Cervical Cancer Cells. I am currently exploring the role of phytochemicals in modulating micro-RNAs and long non-coding RNAs in Cervical Cancer cells.
I am also studying the effect of Cadmium toxicity in rice plants and the possible roles of nanoparticles/fertilizers in ameliorating Cd-induced stress in rice plants.
I am also keen on elucidating the role of iron supplementation through pulsing in the upregulation of carbon and nitrogen assimilation in rice plants.
Research Projects:
1. Evaluation of Phyllanthin induced modulation in micro RNA expressions regulating cell migration, invasion and death in cervical cancer cells. (ICMR, PI, ongoing)
Teaching / Other Experience+
I usually deal with plant physiology and few parts of cell biology and genetics. In Plant Physiology, the areas I cover are plant water realtions, photosynthesis and nitrogen assimilation & metabolism. In genetics, I basically focus on Mendelian genetics and for cell biology, my area is restricted to basics of cellular structures and functions.
Post Graduate Supervision+
I am looking forward to supervise students for their doctoral research. Students enthusiasts in my area and subject of research might contact me.
