The study highlighted the relevance of groundwater quality assessment in highly stressed groundwater systems in parts of Indo Gangetic plains. It revealed the influence ofgeomorphic set up on the hydrochemical processes in the younger alluvial plains has been gradually replaced by anthropogenic influences along with changes in groundwaterdynamics. Further, assessments of hydrochemical facies variation, stable isotopic studies and spatial distribution of trace elements also substantiated the role of emerging localanthropogenic mechanisms impacting the hydrochemistry of the alluvial plains. The study also gave evidence for limited role of sediment groundwater interaction ongroundwater quality in active flood plains.
