Assistant Professor
About-
I specialise in History of Science in Modern India. I have worked on the scientists, laboratory and international networks in the colonial period, i.e.,20th century. Recently I have been working on the history of Heritage conservation and Archaeology in the post-Independent period.
I completed BA from Presidency College in the year 2012 and MA from University of Calcutta, Department of History in 2014. I was also awarded the Linnaeus-Palme scholarship in 2014 and was selected as an exchange student for a semester to the Department of History at Uppsala University, Sweden.
I completed my MPhil at the Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University in 2017. Currently, I am pursuing my PhD from the Department of History, Presidency University.
I am also interested in various areas in History specifically, History of Science, Environmental History, Archaeology, Ancient India and Historical Methods.

Biography+
I completed BA from Presidency College in 2012, MA from Calcutta University 2014. In my post-graduation, I specialised in Modern History. I was interested in Indian Foreign Policy and International Relations and presented a paper on "Arab Spring" in Annual International Studies Convention at Jawaharlal Nehru University in 2013. As I specialised in the History of Medicine and Science, I have also worked on Mahatma Gandhi's ideas on Medicine and Health. In Uppsala University, I studied Global Environmental History.
In JNU, I focused on the History of Nuclear Power in India and worked on the History of the physics at the University College of Science in Calcutta.
I qualified the State Eligibility Test (SET) in 2014 and the National Eligibility Test (NET) in 2015.
Currently, for my PhD, I am trying to trace the History of Archaeology in the post-colonial period in India. I am looking at the various archaeological survey and works carried out by archaeologists and Institutions like ASI, after Independence and how this exercise has shaped the history and politics of writing the history of Ancient India, in contemporary times.
Dr Navras Jaat Afreedi has been assigned as my PhD supervisor.
In 2017 I was selected as an Assistant Professor of History by the West Bengal College Service Commission and taught in a substantive post at Rani Birla Girls' College, Kolkata.
In 2018 I joined Presidency University, Kolkata.
Research / Administrative Experience+
In addition to my PhD research, I am also collaborating with the Faculty of Design, Kyushu University, Japan. We are focusing on the history of the steel beam structures and design in Calcutta, especially Colonial period, i.e., in the first half of the 20th century. We have surveyed old buildings and structures not only in Calcutta but also in the surrounding areas, especially the Jute Mills along the banks of the River Ganga.
The project also deals with Heritage conservation.
Teaching / Other Experience+
This semester I will be teaching Social Formations and Cultural Patterns of the Ancient world and the Understanding Early South Asian Cultures.
I have taught courses on "Everday Life in History", "Social Formations and Cultural Patterns of the Medieval World" and "Understanding Early Modern South Asian Cultures".
Post Graduate Supervision+
I have supervised both Undergraduate and postgraduate students, specifically in areas related to History of Science, Archaeology, Ancient India. As I teach a paper on Everdaylife in History, I am also very much interested in working with the students who are interested in History in Everday life which encompasses, history of clothes, sports, technology, food etc.
