Koel Roychowdhury
Assistant Professor
About-
I am a young researcher and an academic working on the applications of remote sensing and geographical information systems on social/human geography. My work mainly focuses on modeling socio economic metrics from information captured by satellite images. My area of focus comprises remote sensing and its applications, census, sustainable development: concepts and indicators, urban geography, demography and statistics.
Qualifications+
BSc Geography (Presidency College, University of Calcutta, 2002)
MSc Geography (University of Calcutta, 2004)
PGDip Applied Geographical Information System and Remote Sensing (Jadavpur, 2006)
MSc GIS and Human Geography (Leicester, 2008)
PhD (Melbourne, 2011)
Postdoc (Tokyo, 2014)
Biography+
After completing my MSc in Geography from theUniversity of Calcutta in 2004, I was awarded the DFID Commonwealth Scholarship to study in the UK. I obtained an MSc degree from the University of Leicester. My degree was on the use of Geographic Information Systems to study human geography. After my study in the UK, I continued my research and short term teaching assignments in my doctoral program. My doctoral research from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Melbourne, Australia looked into the application of satellite images to propose surrogate census. My work was based on Indian census. I was awarded the Australian Leadership Award by the Australian Government for my PhD research. My research and teaching career further continued in Japan through postdoctoral research. I was awarded the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) postdoctoral fellowship for my research with the United Nations University and University of Tokyo. I focussed my work to explore the utilities of remotely sensed data sources in mapping and analyzing development indicators.
Research / Administrative Experience+
My research primarily explores the utilities of satellite images captured at night in modeling and mapping socio economic indicators. As a postdoctoral fellow I have worked in areas such as application of geospatial technologies in mapping and analyses of health and development indicators. I have also contributed to different projects on sustainability, especially the mapping and temporal analyses of sustainable development indicators. My PhD in Geospatial Sciences from RMIT University, Australia has given me stronghold in working with satellite images. My work focused on proposing surrogate census from satellite images at subnational level. In addition to these, I was associated with a number ofresearch projects with various institutes. I worked as a consultant with Indicus Analytics Private Limited, New Delhi, School of Global, Urban and Social studies, RMIT University, Ordnance Survey, UK and Computer Aided Design Centre, Jadavpur University.
Teaching / Other Experience+
I was associated with teaching since I completed my MSc degree from the University of Calcutta in 2004. In the present department, I am responsible for teaching Population and Urban Geography, Geospatial Techniques and statistical methods, Geography of Development and quantitative methods in Geography.
