About-
My specialization is in modern South Asian history. I read, write and teach the political, social, and cultural history of the region. My approach to teaching is based on recognizing the importance of a mutual dialogue between students and instructor as well as a collective interrogation of sources. Biography+
My doctoral work, at Columbia University, examined the question of why religion and politics became intermeshed in the expression of resistance in Kashmir. It looked at state-making and legitimating practices in colonial India to draw out the transformation of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir from a dominion ruled by a Hindu into a Hindu state. Following my doctoral work, I taught at various universities in the United States, including Columbia University, Tufts University, Bowdoin College and Yale University. In 2010-2011, I was a research fellow at the Shelby Cullom Davis Centre for Historical Studies at Princeton University. I then moved to Trinity College, Dublin, where I taught until joining Presidency University in May 2014.
