Gautam Kumar Deb
Professor
About-
I am a field geologist. SInce my Post-graduate course I have got interest both in Structural Geology and Igneous Petrology. I have done Ph. D. in Structural Geology of an Important Indian Shear ZOne, namely, the SInghbhum SHear Zone. However during my Ph. D. work I also carried out some geochemical works on granitoid rocks and basic lavas. Presently I am working on tectonomagmatic evolution of greenstone belts of Singhbhum and Bastar Cratons, and also of the Chotanagpur Granite Gneiss Complex.
Qualifications+
Ph. D. Applied Geology (ISM, Dhanbad, 1991)
Biography+
My doctoral work at ISM, Dhanbad was on tectonic evolution of the Singhbhum Shear Zone, and then I had carried out three postdoctoral works, (i) on Singhbhum craton at Presidency College, Calcutta, (ii) on evolution of Palghat Cavery shear zone at IIT, Kharagpur, and (iii) on Purana basins at ISI, Kolkata. Besides I completed CSIR Pool Scheme on Sonakhan greenstone belt. Then I joined at Durgapur Govt. College as Assistant Professor in the year of 2003. I got transfer to Presidency College in 2009. Finally I have been promoted three times and now am serving the present Institution as Professor.
Research / Administrative Experience+
My research is mainly on the analysis of strutural geometry of the rocks in Precambrian terrain. However in order to establish the tectonic evolution on regional scale geochemical analysis of the rocks is also important in addition to structural geology. Hence based on major and trace element composition of the deformed and metamorphosed rocks of the concerned area I always attemt to achieve sysnthesis of the problem through field and laboratory data in combination. Besides research and teaching I also take part in carring out examination-related administrative works.
Teaching / Other Experience+
I like to teach in undergraduate classes and take classes on structural geology, crystallography as wellas stritigraphy. I like to take both theory and practical classes.
Post Graduate Supervision+
One Research Fellow has successfully completed his Ph. D. thesis work on petrology and structural geology in the southeastern part of the Singhbhum Shear Zone, and has been awarded Ph. D. Degree in the month of August, 2018. Presently one Research Fellow is working for Ph. D. in an area of the Chotanagpur Granite Gneiss Complex.
