Artificial Intelligence being a ubiquitous entity, is casting impact in all spheres of life including health. AI has revolutionized medical diagnosis, surgical treatments, drug development and design in ways more than one.

National Academy of Science India, in its drive to reach out to the young minds, particularly the school and undergraduate college students, is organizing a one day workshop on Artificial Intelligence in HealthCare on the 24 th of September at the premises of the Presidency University, Kolkata. Title:‘Holes’ or no ‘Holes’ , that is the question: Topological Phase Transition for the beginners
Abstract: The idea of “Topology” - a branch in Mathematics where people talk about properties of spaces that do not change under a continuous deformation, has penetrated the world of Physics, Condensed Matter Physics in particular in the last two decades or so. We have learned about a strange kind of ‘phase transition’ that is markedly different from our known ones. We shall try to learn a few basic things, staying completely within our undergraduate and early post graduate curricula, regarding this exciting area of science.

on 24th July, 2024 at 3.30 PM in the Economics Lecture Theater.
She will talk on
"A Glass Half Full -Experimental Evidence from a Multifaceted Program for Adolescents in India".
The abstract of the talk is as follows:
Drawing on rigorous experimental evidence from a multifaceted large-scale randomized control trial that targets improvements in gender attitudes, education and health among adolescents in ~160 clusters in India, we find that the intervention was successful in improving adolescents’ cognitive and non-cognitive skills in the medium run. Interestingly we find that the intervention was successful in improving unequal gender attitudes related to the allocation of resources between ‘siblings’, however, led to no improvements in views regarding hetero-normative roles concerning ‘husband and wife’ in a family. We complement these with a series of incentivized measures of gender norms which show that while the interventions make both boys and girls a little competitive, a large proportion of both sexes prefer to stick to their gendered roles. This explains why interventions that are successful in improving education and skills may not be enough to improve women’s participation in the workforce.

The Department of Performing Arts is organising a music workshop cum demonstration named "Vadyam" - the instrument series on 24.04.2024 at 15.00 hours in Black Box Theatre. The resource person is "Mandola Joy" the multi instrumentalist.
About Mandola Joy:
Mandola Joy (Puranjay Guha) is one of the exponents in Indian classical music instrument playing. Mandola Joy plays Mandolin and Mandola and he is the creator of 'Shreetar'. “Shreetaar” is an electric fretless improvised Mandola having “chikari” strings and the fingerboard covered with brass plate. He has played different instruments like Rabab, Dotara,Esraj, Ravahatta Tabla, Dholak, Moorsing and many more. Joy plays Carnatic classical music, Indian folk music, Bollywood music and world music. He is a disciple of Pt. V.G.Jog, Pt. Buddhadev Dasgupta and Pt. Partha Chatterjee. Apart from own performances, Madola Joy is engaged in deep research on rare folk instruments from different regions of India. He regularly performs in India and abroad and pursued different international projects and workshops.

Dr. Madhura Damle, Assistant Professor (Political Science), Presidency University, Kolkata is also a trained Kuchipudi artiste. A disciple of Vanashree Rao and subsequently Dr. Madhuri Majumdar, she has been performing Kuchipudi for the last seventeen years. She has been appointed as an examiner at the Department of Dance, Rabindra Bharti University, Kolkata. She has acted in several Sanskrit and Hindi theatre productions and has also directed a multilingual Dastangoi performance. She has also worked as a voice artist.
