Dr. Rishi Bhushan Choubay is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Hindi at Presidency University, Kolkata. Dr. Rishi Bhushan Choubay is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Hindi at Presidency University, Kolkata, India. He holds a Ph.D. in Hindi Literature from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, and has received advanced training in Applied Linguistics from Kendriya Hindi Sansthan, Delhi. Before joining Presidency University in 2013, he worked with the National Testing Service–India (NTS-I) at the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysuru, where he contributed to research and development in educational testing, assessment, and language pedagogy.
With over seventeen years of teaching, research, and academic administration experience, Dr. Choubay’s scholarship lies at the intersection of language studies, literary criticism, multilingualism, translation studies, and educational assessment. He has published extensively in the fields of Hindi language and literature, language philosophy, identity discourses, and cultural studies. His academic contributions also include curriculum development, research supervision, teacher training, and the conceptualisation of several lecture series, seminars, and academic initiatives aimed at promoting interdisciplinary engagement in the humanities.
Beyond academia, he actively disseminates knowledge through public lectures, media interactions, and digital platforms, including his educational initiative, the ‘Redphone Podcast with Rishi’, dedicated to language, literature, and culture. Research Experience
Dr. Rishi Bhushan Choubay has extensive experience in language research, educational assessment, and curriculum development. Prior to joining Presidency University, he served as Junior Resource Person (Lecturer Grade) at the National Testing Service–India (NTS-I), Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysuru, Ministry of Education, Government of India (2009–2013). In this role, he was actively engaged in research and development, material production, item writing, test design, and the preparation of assessment modules for language and literature education. He also coordinated and conducted workshops and training programmes on educational testing and evaluation for school, college, and university teachers across India.
His research interests encompass language studies, applied linguistics, multilingualism, translation studies, literary criticism, identity discourses, and educational assessment. He has contributed significantly to the development of language assessment frameworks, teacher training modules, and innovative pedagogical practices in language and literary studies.
Administrative Experience
At Presidency University, Kolkata, Dr. Choubay has undertaken a wide range of academic and administrative responsibilities since 2013. He has served as a Member of the Students’ Welfare Board, Member of the Board of Studies (BOS) and various departmental committees, including the Departmental Research Committee (DRC), Departmental Academic Committee (DAC), and Research Advisory Committee (RAC). He has also functioned as Head of the Department (In-Charge) at various intervals and has served as Centre-in-Charge for Semester Examinations.
He has worked as the Departmental Coordinator of the Undergraduate Internship Programme under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, overseeing the planning, implementation, and academic coordination of internship and experiential learning activities for undergraduate students.
Additionally, he has played an active role in institutional initiatives related to NAAC accreditation, curriculum development, General Education programmes, Convocation Committees, Bicentenary celebrations, seminar and lecture series, cultural activities, and annual report publications. His administrative contributions reflect a sustained commitment to academic leadership, institutional development, and the promotion of a vibrant intellectual environment within the university.
Teaching and Other Experience
Dr. Rishi Bhushan Choubay has over seventeen years of experience in teaching, research, curriculum development, and academic administration. Since July 2013, he has been serving as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Hindi at Presidency University, Kolkata, where he teaches undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral courses in Hindi language and literature. His teaching encompasses areas such as language studies, literary criticism, applied linguistics, translation studies, cultural studies, and research methodology.
Prior to joining Presidency University, he served as a Lecturer in Hindi at the Kendriya Hindi Sansthan, Delhi Centre, Ministry of Education, Government of India (2008–2009), where he taught Hindi as a Foreign Language to international students enrolled in certificate, diploma, and advanced diploma programmes. He also gained teaching experience at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, where he taught language courses to undergraduate students, including foreign language learners.
Beyond classroom teaching, Dr. Choubay has been actively engaged in curriculum design and revision, educational content development, teacher training, and the integration of innovative pedagogical practices in language and literary education. He has coordinated academic programmes, supervised educational tours and project-based learning activities, developed ICT-mediated teaching resources, and disseminated knowledge through digital platforms, including his educational initiative, the ‘Redphone Podcast with Rishi’. His teaching philosophy emphasises interdisciplinary learning, multilingual competence, critical inquiry, and the application of language and literary studies to contemporary social and cultural contexts.
Dr. Rishi Bhushan Choubay has extensive experience in postgraduate teaching and research supervision. He has supervised a substantial number of Master’s dissertations and minor research projects in diverse areas of Hindi language and literature, including literary criticism, comparative literature, translation studies, language and identity, folklore, journalism, and cultural studies.
Under his supervision, more than 250 Master’s dissertations and research projects have been successfully completed, while several others are currently in progress. He has also supervised and mentored doctoral scholars working on interdisciplinary themes in Hindi studies, fostering rigorous research methodology, critical inquiry, and independent scholarship.
His approach to postgraduate supervision emphasises academic integrity, original research, interdisciplinary perspectives, and the development of advanced research and writing skills among students.
Dr. Rishi Bhushan Choubay is actively engaged with academic and professional bodies dedicated to the advancement of language, literature, and higher education. He has served as a Member of the Review Board of Anagh: An International Online Journal of Hindi Language, Literature and Culture and has maintained active academic associations with several leading institutions and knowledge centres, including the National Library, Kolkata, and the Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad, Kolkata.
He also contributes to the academic community as an external examiner, paper setter, and subject expert for various universities and selection bodies across India, and regularly participates in seminars, workshops, conferences, and scholarly forums devoted to language studies, literary criticism, educational assessment, and multilingual education.
