"How well do we know our universe?"


Professor Jayant Narlikar is one of the best-known scientists of India, specialising in
Cosmology and Astrophysics. His educational career started at the University of
Cambridge, where he was a founding member of the faculty at the Institute of Theoretical
Astronomy. Later he established one of the internationally leading groups of Cosmology and Relativity
at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, and was the founding director of
the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Pune, India. He is very well-known for his
alternative theories of the genesis of the Universe, and for his contribution to understanding some
of the very basic concepts of force and gravity. He is also a prolific author of popular science books and of
science fiction in English and in Marathi. He was awarded the Kalinga Award by UNESCO in 1996
for his work in Science Outreach.
Professor Narlikar was awarded the Padmabhushan by the Govt of India in 1965 (at the age
of 26) and the Padmavibhushan in 2004.

Presidency University is honoured to award Professor Narlikar the Doctor of Science degree Honoris Causa
at their Convocation of 22 August 2015
